4.4 Standards and Protocols
To be a workable technology for public
use, cryptographic systems generally need to be interoperable. That
is, messages encrypted with one vendor’s cryptography product should
be able to be decrypted by another vendor’s cryptography product.
In order for this to happen, the community needs to agree on the cryptographic
and hashing algorithms used. A number of organizations have been involved
with formal cryptography-related standards, including the IEEE, ANSI,
IETF, RSA Data Security, Inc. and FIPS.
