Security Issues with Smartcards

Smartcards are often used as part of an authentication process. Because it is possible for the smartcard to be lost or stolen, it is important that the authentication process depend on “something you know” (like a PIN) or “something you are” (like biometric data) as well as the smartcard (“something you have”), when access to sensitive data and resources is involved.

The risk of someone else coming into possession of the smartcard means that any data stored on the card should be encrypted to protect against unauthorized access.

Additionally, since there are many different formats of smartcards, you should be sure to have readers compatible with your chosen card available in all locations in which you might wish to retrieve data. (Without the proper reader device, you can’t get to the data.)

Smartcard Security Issues

Security concerns with smartcards involve compatibility issues, vulnerability to theft, and the fact that sometimes a secondary method of identification should be used along with the smartcard to protect sensitive resources from access by unauthorized people.
