2.3.3.4 Privacy
As noted earlier in this section,
there are privacy issues with the use of this technology, because most
IM systems do not support encryption or authentication. See the comments
above on packet sniffing. Further there are legal ramifications that
vary based on industry (such as finance or health-related) and geography.
Clearly it is impossible to detail all of them here. Check your
local resources.

There may be legal ramifications to the use of IM between your internal network and the Internet, or between employees within your internal network, due to privacy concerns.

 IM in the Real World, Today
What Instant Messaging software is used at your organization? Do you use a secure IM package such as Trillian, or do you require that IM conversations travel across a VPN? Does your organization require that records be kept of all written communications, like the brokerage industry, or have strong confidentiality requirements such as in health-related industries (HIPAA)?
