XVII IPv6
A great amount of thought has been
given to IP v6. Bringing it fully into our daily lives will take some
time. There are enough changes in the IP protocol to fill several door
stop technical manuals. In this body of work we will examine the
most obvious change.

Internet Protocol Version 6, sometimes referred to as IPNG (for IP Next Generation), incorporates a breadth of new thoughts. A number of proposals were introduced, (CATNIP, TUBA and SIPP) and all insufficient to meet the accepted list of requirements, but that SIPP, as defined in RFC 1710, came closest. Changes were made to SIPP (such as instead of doubling the 32 bit addressing of the current IP standard to 64 bits) the SIPP proposal was modified to use 128 bits, and features from other proposals would be added to it to fulfill the remaining IPNG requirements. The proposed solution is called IP Version 6 (IPv6). |
