New in IPv6

Internet Protocol Version 6, sometimes referred to as IPNG (for IP Next Generation), incorporates a breadth of new thoughts. A number of proposals were introduced, (CATNIP, TUBA and SIPP) and all “insufficient to meet the accepted list of requirements, but that SIPP, as defined in RFC 1710, came closest.” Changes were made to SIPP (such as instead of doubling the 32 bit addressing of the current IP standard to 64 bits) the SIPP proposal was modified to use 128 bits, and features from other proposals “would be added to it to fulfill the remaining IPNG requirements. The proposed solution is called IP Version 6 (IPv6).”
