Well Known Services and Ports

The chart below highlights some of the most important “well known services” (protocols) and the ports at which to find them. There are many more TCP/IP application protocols available, to serve different specialized purposes. For example, database servers, remote server logins, and even graphical user interfaces used on machines in a TCP/IP network have been assigned their own port numbers (these are beyond the scope of what’s required for Network+, which only requires that you be familiar with the most common port numbers and services).

PORTS

Expect
to be tested on the popular well-known port numbers. The most common numbers and their associated service are listed here.

Placing the protocols in their respective layers will help you remember what protocol and port is for what type of communication.
