VIII  Viruses

Anti-Virus Protection

Several good anti-virus programs exist, and frankly are of little to no value if you do not keep them up-to-date. Just as with organic viruses, these nasty critters morph either on their own or get help with changes from a human.

Update early, update often

If you haven’t updated your anti-virus program’s virus signature database recently, then you are probably not protected from any viruses that have been developed after the date of last database update.

Update everywhere

Knowing that anti-virus programs need to be updated, and used system-wide should be considered valid test questions.

Beyond updating anti-virus programs system-wide, other precautions are in order.

Good sense tips include:

Be wary of floppy disks from unknown sources. In a few cases, even major software firms have accidentally distributed viruses.

Write protect diskettes whenever practical.

Use extra caution when downloading programs. Not too long ago, a famous shareware program was hijacked by name, with a destructive program, and distributed as a version update to the popular shareware program.

Scan all attachments before opening them. Melissa is an example of a recent virus that would broadcast itself to the first 50 people in an Outlook contact folder, with the subject line, “Important Information from (Contact Name)”. This rapidly spread across the planet.

Save files in RTF or ASCII format, whenever possible. Viruses cannot hide in these types of programs. Try downloading to a floppy disk and scan the disk for a virus before opening it.

Backup up all data files regularly, and be sure to rotate to different backup media.

Protect Everything

Make sure anti-virus software is used on mail programs, servers and client machines. The best defense is the total approach. It CAN happen to you.
