VIII Proactive Testing
Diagnostic testing needs to
be part of a routine to keep you out of reactive mode as much as possible.
This requires having the proper tools to accomplish the mission.
Cable Tester
Different cable testers offer
different levels of troubleshooting. For $100 or less, you can get a
basic cable tester that will check both coax and UTP cable. More
money gets you a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer). This
rather expensive piece of equipment sends a signal, and measures
the time it takes to come back. That is translated into distance,
with good accuracy. The more accurate, the more you must
invest.
 A Time Domain Reflectometer can be your friend
A TDR will locate cable faults within a few feet.

Loop Back Connector
A loop back connector crosses
the sending and receiving pins on either a serial or
RJ connector. Plug it in, and test.
Loopback connectors are your friend
A loop back connector can test, transmit, and receive functionality of either a serial port or a NIC, when using the appropriate connector. |
