Twisted Pair Cable Naming Conventions
Legacy cable topologies made up of
twisted-pair technologies include two primary varieties: those used
with IBM-specific networks and those used with vendor-neutral Ethernet
networks. Each has its own naming convention to quickly identify the
capabilities of the particular variety of cabling.
Type and Cat
Type is an IBM standard and used for Token Ring, CAT (category) is for other than IBM and usually used for Ethernet.
In the legacy Ethernet world, you may find Cat 3 UTP (Category 3 Unshielded Twisted Pair), and Cat 5 (Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair). Typically, these types of cable are used to construct networks with star topologies.
In the IBM Token Ring world, you may find Type 1 STP (Shielded Twisted Pair). As noted earlier, this is used to construct networks with ring topologies. |
