NETSTAT
NETSTAT reveals the status
of all active TCP and UTP port activity for either
workstations or servers. Preventing this type of
information being revealed can be accomplished by blocking
UTP ports 137, and 138 along with TCP port 139 at
the routers that serve connections.
To use the NETSTAT command, type
NETSTAT with the appropriate switches at the Command Prompt. As with
the other command-line utilities, you can use the "/?" Switch to obtain
the list of valid switches and an explanation of what they do.

Port Number
A packet of data determines what machine to go to, by its destination IP address. It determines what service to invoke on that machine by its port number.
If you are looking at a network analyzer log, you can decipher a packets source address, destination address and port number, to find out more about what that conversation is trying to accomplish. |
