Layer 6 - Presentation Layer
The presentation layer is generally
considered to be the province of the operating system.
Its purpose is to prepare data
for the application layer and format data. Sometimes
data compression or encryption occurs here. Encryption
is the process of encoding data, usually using some sort
of key word or phrase; so that when the data is viewed by an unauthorized
individual it is unintelligible. You might want to encrypt data
if you are running over a public network, using a VPN. Data
compression is the process of encoding data in a (usually
non-secret) way that allows it to be stored in less space than
it would normally take up. You might want to use data compression
to send data from one host to another, across a slow network
link, to minimize transmission time.
