Kerberos
One open industry-standard authentication
protocol that does not transmit the users password over
the network is the Kerberos system from the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT). Kerberos assigns a unique key, called a
ticket, to each user who authenticates him or herself to the
network. This authentication ticket is embedded in requests for other
services, and is used to determine whether the user is, or is not, authorized
to use that service.
