Networks can be classified by the size and scope of the geographical area in which they exist. Three terms are commonly used to describe types of networks in terms of their geographic scope. These are:

  • LAN: Local Area Network

  • MAN: Metropolitan Area Network

  • WAN: Wide Area Network
