In February 1980, the group began the OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) reference model. This gave each vendor a standard to follow so that different products would actually work together.
  
  
• IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) standards
  
  
• The IEEE has its own set of networking standards, the 802.x series, which describe physical characteristics of different types of networks, such as signaling mechanism, physical cabling, and internetwork communication mechanisms.
