I Concepts & Terms Required - Chapter 0010
- The ISO (International Organization for
Standards)
- The OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) reference
model
- The IEEE has its own set of networking
standards
- Understand the theory of the OSI (Open
System Interconnect) model, and know the purpose of each of the
OSI Layers (All People Seem to Need Data Processing)
- The OSI model is a theoretical framework
that defines how to accomplish network communications.
- The ISO (International Organization
for Standards) comprises a global team effort to provide interoperability
across different countries and vendors. In February 1980, the group
began the OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) reference model. This
gave each vendor a standard to follow so that different products
would actually work together.
- IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers) standards
- The IEEE has its own set of networking
standards, the 802.x series, which describe physical characteristics
of different types of networks, such as signaling mechanism, physical
cabling, and internetwork communication mechanisms.
