802.1 Internetwork Definition
This defines LAN optimization,
bridging and switching for internetworking, or
creating networks of networks. Spanning tree algorithms for routing
packets in Internets came from this group. These functions deal with
examining and filtering traffic that travels along a wire based on physical
addresses, to ensure that only traffic destined for hardware addresses
on that wire is passed along to that wire. Bridges and switches will
be discussed in more detail in the chapter on Network Hardware. For
now, be aware that they are devices that isolate segments of the network
from unnecessary traffic.
