Using the Windows Disk Defragmenter

Issues with Defragmentation

Defragmentation programs do face several challenges. If a computer has been in serious use, files may be very scattered, and it could take a substantial amount of time to run the first time. Each time you delete or move a file or folder or program, the related entries in the FAT are also jostled about.

Other programs may interfere with defragmentation. If any program writes to the drive while the defragmentation program is running, the process must begin again.

Stopping and Starting the Defrag Process

Anti-Virus software and Screen Savers may prevent the defragmentation program from completing.

Defragmentation programs can be set to run automagically (say at night) either through the program itself, or the free defragmentation program that comes with some version of Windows can be set up as a scheduled task with the built in program called the Task Scheduler.
