SCANDISK
SCANDISK is used to find
and repair errors on floppy and hard drives.
The good news is it works most of the time, saving untold grief. It
performs the same functions as the Windows version of scandisk, but
without the pretty user interface. Youll be glad its there,
user interface or not, though, the first time you run into a disk so
corrupt that Windows will not boot into its GUI.

C:\>SCANDISK /SURFACE
Finds and repairs errors
SCANDISK repairs floppy and hard drive errors, using the switch, /SURFACE. For example: C:\>SCANDISK /SURFACE will not only look for errors in the indexing system, it will also test each magnetic bit on the surface of the media and if it finds a weak spot, will remove any data and put it in a safer area and mark the weak spot as bad and unusable. Note that the /surface option increase the time it takes to run SCANDISK. |

SCANDISK was introduced in DOS 5, prior versions of DOS used CHKDSK. CHKDSK could not perform a surface scan. |
