IV Troubleshooting and Dr. Watson
Now that you know about NT and its
layers of protection, it is clear to you that less fatal errors may
be contained. For example, lets assume that WinWord.Exe dies a horrible
death while you are typing an A+ O/S book. (It happens!)
You might want to know what is going
on. NT is there to help you. At the point WinWord.Exe dies, a message
comes up informing you of the fatal error. This message
come courtesy of Dr. Watson. This digital doctor will write
out all sorts of data about what was happening to help you
figure out what caused the crash of Word. (Generally, itll be
of more help to a programs authors than it will be to you, but
its useful to know how to collect this data in case Microsoft
or another vendor asks you to do so.) The file DRWTSN32.LOG
can be found in the WINNT folder. Click Start, then Run,
and then type drwtsn32.
Dr. Watsons Clues
Dr. Watson will leave evidence of the crime in the file DRWTSN32.LOG found in the WINNT folder. |
