II How Operating Systems Work To be functional with a computer it is necessary to understand how the interface operated by the computer user works. This interface is known as the Operating System (OS). An Operating System controls the hardware and the applications (programs) used on a computer. Understanding how the OS works assists us in making informed decisions regarding hardware and software purchases.
