File Properties and Sharing

If we click on the Sharing Tab, the window in Figure 101 appears. This is a file property.

Figure 101: File Properties Window: Sharing Tab

Notice that this folder is not shared. This means that permission is not granted to network users on other computers, to view the file. This is known as network file permission or network share permission. Share permissions apply to users accessing network files from Windows 9x machines in addition to NT machines.

Note: Be aware that these are permissions for network users on other computers in your network. On Windows 9x, even if a file or folder is not shared, it doesn’t mean that no one except you can ever access it – anyone logging on to your computer will be able to access your files or folders. Remember that only NTFS has additional attributes to specify file permissions that apply to local users as well as network users.

If we click on Shared As, we will see the window of Figure 102 appear.

Figure 102: File Properties: Shared As Window

To add sharing, we click on the Shared As button and then add any comments we may have. An example of this appears in Figure 102. We must then choose whom to share this folder with. When the folder or file is shared we will then see a graphical depiction of this when we view the folder as an icon: it appears as a folder held in an outstretched hand.

File/Folder Properties

To get to File/Folder Properties, you can also right-click a folder or file that is on the desktop, and then click Properties.
