Using ATTRIB to Reveal a Hidden File
If you want to see the contents of
MSDOS.SYS, enter this command:
ATTRIB MSDOS.SYS A
S H
Run the DIR command
as above, and this time, it will be displayed. From here, enter:
C:\>EDIT MSDOS.SYS
Now you will see that MSDOS.SYS
is a text file, and contains a notation that it must be greater than
1024 bytes in length to keep older DOS program happy.

Notice the line that states, BOOTGUI=1 ? If you ever have a client that strongly dislikes GUI interfaces, change this line to BOOTGUI=0 and save the file. Change the attributes back. Now on the next boot the Windows startup splash screen will appear, then disappear, going back to a command driven interface (CDI). You could even delete the splash screen, however we do not suggest this. This is because if another user wants to use the GUI interface, all they have to type is WIN and they will have their normal interface. |
