VIII Physical Characteristics The physical characteristics of a hard drive consist of Platters, Spindle, Read/Write Heads and the Actuator Arm. These are enclosed in a sealed case to protect them from any contamination. It is very important to never open a hard drive because even one spec of dust inside the unit would most likely cause the drive to become unusable.
