Variable data files are located here. Printer spool files, log files, cache files are a few examples of the types of files that would be kept within this directory.

Linux is Not for the Unwary

An important point about one of the basic philosophies of UNIX and like systems, including Linux, is that the command line assumes that the user knows what they are doing. It will do exactly what it is told to do, usually without asking for confirmation. A command to delete or remove files will do exactly that without asking for a confirmation. It will delete everything it is told to delete. Nevertheless, an -i option (for confirmation) is available. Without the -i option, all information will be deleted that the user has the privilege or the authorization to be able to delete. Be aware that file recovery after delete is virtually impossible, backup tapes are usually necessary.
