passwd - Update A Users Authentication Tokens (Password) Every user can change their password using this command: passwd [userid] The userID argument for this command is only necessary when root is resetting a users password. The user will will be prompted for their new password, the system will then verify that the password meets the minimum number of characters that the system requires and verify that the password is not a common dictionary word. If the password does not meet these criteria, the user will be informed as to which criterion it did not meet and be asked to re-enter a new password. Once a password is entered that meets the systems security criteria, the user will be prompted to re-enter their password for confirmation and finally if the two passwords match, the system will set up the new password.
