Removable media such as floppies, CD-ROMs, and zip drives would have their file systems mounted in this directory. This directory is the location to mount temporarily various file systems. Although a file system may be mounted anywhere, removable media is usually mounted here. Some distributions may mount removable media at other locations, i.e. KNOPPIX mounts the CD-Rom at /cdrom

File systems must be mounted before the can be used. This is usually done by the system administrator using the command mount, and removed using the unmount command. These commands will be discussed later in the section on key administrative commands or functions.
