Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot224 is an exceptionally useful spyware removal and prevention tool. It is very easy to use – when run for the first time, a wizard takes you through the basic configuration and scanning steps. To check a computer for spyware, simply run Spybot, click the “Search & Destroy” item on the toolbar and click “Start Check”. A full check can take up to 5 minutes, but will find almost any spyware and usage trackers.

Select the items you wish to fix by placing a check in the box to the left of each item, and click “Fix Selected Problems”.

As with all tools of this nature, be careful when repairing “problems”. It can be quite easy to break a legitimate program when removing what appear to be suspicious entries! Pay close attention to the “usage tracking” items Spybot finds – most are harmless and provide the “Last file you opened” functionality in many applications.

Spybot has one other extremely useful function. By clicking on the “Immunization” toolbar item, you can tell Spybot to immunize your system against some common Spyware. Prevention is always better than a cure!
