SingleMode/MultiMode Fiber Fiber-optics are made in one of two forms: SingleMode and MultiMode. MultiMode fiber has a larger core, and allows hundreds of rays of light to pass through the fiber at the same time. SingleMode fiber is much smaller and only allows one ray of light to pass through. SingleMode fiber maintains integrity over longer distances. MultiMode fibers used when distance requirements are 2 km or less. Fiber-Optic cable comes in different diameters. SingleMode is typically 8-10 um with the outside jacket measuring 125 um. Contrast this to Multimode, which while retaining the 125um outer diameter typically has either a 50um or a 62.5um core. The actual fiber can be made of glass or in some cases, less expensive plastic. Some MultiMode fiber creators are offering a core of 125um!
