Scandisk
Windows 95 and 98 uses a tool called
Scandisk to check and repair these types of errors. To run it, type
scandskw at the Start Run prompt. In Windows ME,
you can find the tool in the system tools folder.

Before starting a scan,
click the Advanced button to set the required options.

Once you are happy with
the configuration, (the default settings are usually fine), click the
OK button to dismiss the dialog. Select the type of test
you wish to perform, select the drive that you would like to perform
it on and click Start. Scandisk will spend a considerable
amount of time checking the disk structure, and report any errors it
finds.
