Recovering from a Lost Password Let us face it; we have all locked our keys in the car. This is much more serious, but involves that same temporary insanity part of the brain we cannot seem to control. You or one of your users loses a password. If it is just a user, you can reset it at the same screen in System Preferences where you set it in the first place. If you or your only administrator loses their password, well, it takes a little more work to fix. Nevertheless, it is possible to reset an administrator password: Use the Mac OS X installation disk and during the installation process you will be given the option of resetting an administrator password. This does mean you need to be careful where you leave the OS X disk, since anyone with access to it can reset the passwords. Well, we have covered the nuts and bolts of Mac OS X. As I am sure you can tell I am more than a little Apple-centric. In addition, while Macs and their users are still very much in the minority, we do appreciate that everything has its time and place. Moreover, if you ever work in an environment with an art department, an educational setting, or with anyone who likes to work on the Rolls Royce of computers, you need to know the basics.
