Microsoft System Information Tool (Msinfo32.exe) This tool collects system information such as installed hardware, drivers, resources they use. It is a kind of all the information on one place tool. You can easily search this database, its well organized and you have a find option in new versions. It will show you conflicts, but all the information is read only. You cannot change anything if it doesnt count that can call other troubleshooting tools from the menu. All the information it collects can be easily exported to a file, which is excellent for technical support duties. Technical support personnel will know the users both hardware and software environment at the time, if it gets it saved in .NFO file! You can even directly connect to the remote computer and get this information. And the list of great features does not end here: in addition to this, you can see a directory so that you can track changes! You can manage the program from the command line meaning you can send a batch to your customer, which the customer then saves the information for example.

Msinfo32.exe is an updated version of Winmsd.exe (Microsoft Diagnostics). In Windows 2000 an XP when you run Winmsd.exe the Msinfo32.exe is being run. Msd.exe is a 16-bit version of Microsoft Diagnostics. It's a text mode version you'll use in DOS and Windows 3.1. System Information was first introduced in Windows 98.
