Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) The Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV137) is the mainstay component of the surge protection industry. For most electronic devices, the MOV is an excellent choice. The MOV functions by creating a short circuit, and shunting the surge voltage to ground, when a preset voltage threshold is exceeded. Essentially, the MOV diverts the surge voltage away from the devices protected by the surge protector138. Unfortunately, the MOV is a sacrificial component139. The performance life of any surge protector using the MOV is finite. With every surge voltage the protector diverts, the MOV nears its inevitable end140. __________________ 137. http://www.fujisemiconductor.com/test_web/mov/ 138. http://www.transysprotection.com/technology_comparison_1.htm 139. http://www.nteinc.com/Web_pgs/MOV.html 140. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,1155237,00.asp
