Configuring Internet Explorer Security Zones (Page 3 of 7) IE Network Zones First, let us examine the zones. Local Intranet is, as the name implies, for sites that are on your local network and thus trusted to be safe to view. The Trusted sites zone is used for sites on the Internet that you do not have control over, but you do know are absolutely safe to view. The Restricted sites zone is for Internet sites that you know are not safe to view without a large amount of security restrictions when doing so. Finally, the Internet zone is the zone automatically used by Internet Explorer when a site you access is not already configured in one of the other zones. As you will spend most of your time, browsing sites that you have not configured, this is the most important zone to get right. As a practical example, we will configure the Internet Zone. Click on the Internet icon once, and the display in the bottom half of the dialog will change. Because we want to start with a secure configuration and only allow what we need, we will use one of the default security configurations Internet Explorer provides for us: in this case High for maximum security. First, click the Default Level button then drag the slider that appears up to the top.
