Configuring Internet Explorer Proxy and Connections (Page 2 of 3) LAN Settings Not every network has a proxy server, so the first task is to find out if you need to configure one. First, click the LAN Settings button on the Connections tab of the Internet Explorer configuration dialog. You will see a dialog appear similar to Figure 472.
As shown above, all the checkboxes in the dialog (especially Use a proxy server) are unchecked. This means Internet Explorer will attempt to make a direct connection to any web site requested. OK this dialog, and OK the main Internet Explorer configuration dialog. Next, open Internet Explorer and attempt to browse to a web site. If the site appears, a proxy server is not required. However if Internet Explorer cannot retrieve pages from the requested web site, it is likely that a proxy is required. Open the Internet Explorer properties dialog again, and navigate to the proxy server configuration dialog. Tick the Use a proxy server checkbox, and enter the details in the edit boxes in Figure 473.
