Chapter 5: The Linux Operating System by Phil Hopkins A chapter on Linux may be surprising in a book for A+ operating system review. However, with the rapid growth of Linux in the server room and the fact that some companies are now considering it for use on the desktop it is appropriate to include this chapter in anticipation of CompTIA including a Linux set of objectives to the test. This chapter will review the basics of the Linux operating system including major system directories and the files, command line interface basics, Linux System Administration basics, and a basic GUI based administration tool. Distribution installation will not be covered since the installation process is different for each major distribution and documentation is available on the websites for each distribution (see table further on).
