Chapter 16: Network Load Balancing and Clustering by Ian Kayne Since NT 4, Microsoft has realized the value of targeting their products at the high availability, large enterprise market. Windows NT 4, 2000 and 2003 Server are all available in Enterprise editions that provide better scalability and performance when under load on powerful machines. This section concentrates on two features provided by the Enterprise editions of Windows to enhance the availability and performance of software: Network Load Balancing, and Clustering. Whilst these two technologies may appear identical at first glance, they are used for very distinct purposes.
